UFC 137: PENN vs. DIAZ

Nick Diaz, who was originally scheduled to headline the card opposite Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship, was pulled from the fight on September 7, due to failing to make media appearances. Carlos Condit was promoted from his fight with B.J. Penn to replace Diaz and face St-Pierre.

On September 8, B.J. Penn announced via Twitter that Dana White offered him a fight he "cannot refuse" and will still be fighting at UFC 137. Later that day, both Penn and White announced that the fight would be against Nick Diaz.

Georges St. Pierre was expected to defend his title against Carlos Condit on this card, but had to withdraw due to knee injury. Nick Diaz vs. B.J. Penn was promoted to the main event.

STRIKEFORCE Welterweight World Champion Nick Diaz (24-1, 1 NC) will defend his title in a highly anticipated grudge match against the brawling Paul “Semtex” Daley (26-9-2) in the April 9 main event. Gilbert Melendez (18-2) will make the second defense of his STRIKEFORCE Lightweight World Title against the powerful Tatsuya Kawajiri (27-6-2). Also on the April 9 card is a bitter showdown between current DREAM Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi and former UFC star Keith Jardine.

The show was officially announced during the Showtime broadcast of EliteXC: Return of the King and the main event featured a rematch between Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith, whose match on the initial EliteXC: Primetime broadcast was stopped due to an unintentional eye poke. This event was the second EliteXC event to air on CBS.

Also of note this card also featured the final fight of Justin Eilers, who was killed in a domestic dispute on Christmas Day 2008 by his step-father.

Gilbert Melendez was originally scheduled to fight Josh Thomson before Thomson broke his leg while sparring. Rodrigo Damm was brought in as a replacement instead.

Georges St-Pierre was originally scheduled to defend his Welterweight Championship against Nick Diaz in the main event. However, on December 7, 2011, it was revealed St-Pierre had suffered an ACL injury that forced him out of the fight. Diaz will now face Carlos Condit with the winner receiving an interim title belt.
